Ratings

Inspected accommodation providers featured on this website has either been assessed under the National Quality Assurance standards or the Cumbria Tourism scheme Quality Cumbria. Some properties are self-assessed rather than being part of a recognised national scheme.  They have voluntarily signed the Keswick Tourism Association Quality Accommodation Charter which requires them to fulfil all legal requirements and responsibilities and to provide a good quality service to visitors at all times.

There are two national assessing bodies - Visit England and the AA. Both work to National Quality Assurance standards and use independent impartial assessors. Properties are given a quality rating of 1-5 stars and are entitled to display the Visit England Quality Rose logo or the AA logo. These quality ratings indicate the overall accommodation standard, cleanliness, hospitality, service and quality of food. The higher the star rating, the higher the quality of the accommodation and the greater the range of facilities and services offered.

Star ratings are also accompanied by a category which describes the assessment criteria and includes -

  • Hotels - There are higher expectations and facilities for hotels compared to guest accommodation. Due to the scheme designator, there are many smaller and personally-run 2 star hotels that are of high quality, yet just lack the facilities a larger hotel can provide.
  • Guest Accommodation – this can apply to B&Bs, Guest Houses, Farmhouses, Restaurants with Rooms and Inns. Guest accommodation is assessed more by the quality provided than the number of services available – for instance a specific reception area is not a requirement .  A four star hotel  will have greater levels of service and facilities compared to 4 star guest accommodation as different criteria apply to hotels.
  • Self Catering - A quality score is awarded for every aspect  of the accommodation, the comfort ,the range and quality of kitchen equipment and, most importantly, cleanliness. For very high scoring properties a Gold award may be awarded.
  • Parks – includes Camping, Touring and Holiday Parks

Quality Cumbria is the local quality assessment scheme in partnership with Visit England. Quality Cumbria properties are assessed by  accommodation criteria and the main aim is safety followed by cleanliness and comfort. The QC scheme does not include stars or require overnight accommodation for assessment.

AA & Visit England Awards

Visit England give Gold and Silver awards to accommodation providers that not only achieve their overall rating but also provide execptional quality throughout. Properties awarded a VisitEngland Gold or Silver Award offer the ‘best of the best’, regardless of the range of facilities and services they offer.

The AA Gold Stars are awarded to the very best of Guest Accommodation within the 3,4 and 5 star ratings. The AA give red stars to select hotels in each star grading. These are awarded Inspector's Choice status. AA inspected restaurants are given rosettes (one to five) annually for the quality of their food.

Breakfast Awards

Accommodation providers with exceptionally high scores for the quality of their breakfast are entitled to display the VisitEngland or AA Breakfast award.
