The cafe has a stunning 100ft long glass wall looking down on the new octagonal walled garden that sits on the same spot as the old Lingholm kitchen gardens that Beatrix Potter credited as her original inspiration for Mr McGregor's garden in The Tale of Peter Rabbit.
The Chalet Tearooms & Restaurant
The Chalet Tearooms is situated in the Lakeland village of Portinscale nestled on the shores of Derwentwater. A place where you can enjoy walks, hire boats and hop on the launches to and from Keswick.
Try one of the many Wainwright fell walks including the famous Catbells (which translates into shelter of the wild cat) the best views in the whole of the Lake District in our opinion. Portinscale village is a great base for the keen Lakeland adventurer or rambler alike.
We welcome ramblers and their dogs, cyclists will find electric bike charging, outdoor seating and Whinlatter Forest close by, C2C riders often stop off for a well earned break. If you just want a tasty lunch or snack homemade cakes and gf/vegan options ate here, there’s something for everyone at The Chalet Tearooms.
Open all year round The Chalet is dog friendly and car parking is available, however we are only 15 min walk from Keswick town and have watersports nearby.
Bassenthwaite Lake Station
Bassenthwaite Lake Station is a Café in a restored railway station with a full size replica steam train on the former Cockermouth to Keswick line.
Situated opposite the scenic Dubwath Silver Meadows nature reserve.
Enjoy breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea aboard the replica Orient Express train.
Customers can enjoy a short level walk along the platform through the woodland and wild flower meadow or enjoy a peaceful few minutes in the bird hide overlooking the wildlife pond
The French SNCF Class 241 steam engine that is now a permanent fixture on the track is in fact a replica - the very train that appears in the Kenneth Branagh 2017 film adaptation of Agatha Christie’s novel ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ starring Dame Judi Dench and Johnny Depp. Built a little bit wider than a ‘real life’ train in order to fit in camera crews, nowadays the Restaurant carriage serves as seating for our café with enough room to comfortably accommodate around 30 people, whereas the Salon carriage is reserved for Afternoon Teas.
