Selfies don't have to be all about queuing up to get that perfect shot in a famous place simply to post on your social media account . Instead they can remind us about the places we have visited, whether well-known or off the beaten track, doing fun activities and spending precious time with those we love. We've put together our pick of the perfect backgrounds for your selfie in and around Keswick.

A Watery Background

There are so many beautiful locations to choose around Keswick with a watery backdrop for your selfie. Friars Crag is just a short walk from the centre of Keswick with picture postcard views over Derwentwater and the jaws of Borrowdale in the distance. Surprise View, just above Ashness bridge, looks over the whole of Derwentwater towards the Skiddaw range. Crow Park has a wonderful backdrop of Derwentwater and Catbells. These are very well known and much photographed spots but you can just as easily find a quiet spot on the shores of Derwentwater to capture your own individual shot. There are tarns too such as Watendlath and Tewett Tarn in idyllic settings and in quieter areas.

At the Summit

Reaching the top is a great place for a selfie (though do take care where you stand to take it). It doesn't have to be the highest fell or mountain to enjoy the views and get a great sense of achievement . Some of our lowest summits still have fantastic views such as Castlehead, which has a great backdrop of Derwentwater and the surrounding fells.  The smallest Wainwright, Castle Crag at 290m, also has fabulous views over Derwentwater. The wooden viewing platform on Raven Crag provides a great panorama of Thirlmere and the surrounding fells whilst a round trip to the summit of Latrigg can be accomplished in a couple of hours from Keswick town centre and rewards you with breath-taking views over the town, lakes and fells.

With a Four Legged Friend

Many dog owners confess to taking more selfies with their dog than with their partner. Many dogs even have their own social media account. But if you don't have a dog to get up close to head to the Lake District Wildlife Park where you could choose, amongst many other possibilities, a zebra or a ring tailed lemur as a background.

Doing Something You Love

Taking a selfie whilst doing something you love is great for making memories. What we enjoy will be different for everyone -  going for a walk with family or friends, taking a trip on the Keswick Launch with your dog, a spot of wild swimming or water sports on the lake, taking part in a race or going along to an event or festival. So get snapping a selfie and capture your happy moments.

With Something Quirky

A selfie with something quirky makes for a great background to a selfie. You could visit the Derwent Pencil Museum home of the world's largest pencil, take a trip to Keswick Museum with its musical stones and 700 year old cat, just two of its many curios or visit the anti gravity room at Puzzling Place. Outdoors there's the Bowder Stone, one of the most famous rocks in the Lake District, a boulder weighing in at 2000 tonnes and 30 feet high. Discover Millican Dalton's Cave, the home of  the “Professor of Adventure” where he lived in summer on the side of Castle Crag for nearly 50 years. Castlerigg Stone Circle, just on the outskirts of Keswick, is one of the earliest stone circles to be found in Britain and consists of 38 free standing stones, some up to 3 metres high. On the shores of Derwentwater the wooden sculpture of carved hands or the National Trust Centenary Stone, carved from a boulder of volcanic rock from the nearby Borrowdale Valley make great backdrops.
