Free weekend to mark new exhibition and annual opening at Wordsworth House
Wordsworth House and Garden opens its doors on 2 April, showcasing the beautiful spring garden and an exciting new exhibition for the 2022 season.
Entitled Scree, the exhibition was co-created with local poet, writer and photographer Lucy Burnett and explores our complicated and ever-changing relationship with the landscape that surrounds us.
To celebrate its opening at poet William’s birthplace, the National Trust is inviting Cumbrian residents for a free visit on Saturday 2ndand Sunday 3rd April.
Zoe Gilbert, Wordsworth House’s visitor experience and operations manager, said: ‘Scree is about nature’s power to shape us and the impact we, in turn, have on the environment. These areissues that affect us all.
‘The exhibition combines the written word, stunning images, commissioned short films and a range of evocative objects chosen by Lucy to exemplify her relationship with this very special place.
‘We are especially thrilled to have manuscripts on loan from The Wordsworth Trust and some fascinating geological specimens from Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery.’
Lucy Burnett said “This exhibition draws from Scree, my online guidebook to the Lakeland Fells. Instead of offering scenic walks to honeypot locations or rugged peak-bagging adventures, the routes in Scree are artistic provocations. I’m interested in playfully asking questions to rethink our relationship with the Lake District, through writing and art, walking, running or cycling.
‘Scree doesn’t provide the answers – that’s where you come in. I invite you to follow the routes and come up with your own responses, by engaging creatively with the landscape through writing orart!’
Wordsworth House is hosting a series of linked talks and workshops from Lucy Burnett and others, including the poet Helen Mort, authors Stephen Cooper, Kathleen Jones and Professor Angus Winchester. Scree is open daily, except Thursday and Friday, 10am to 4pm, from 2 April to 6 November and admission is free with entry to the house and garden.
