Why not try our new Quest for the Quill and hunt through the house and garden for clues to where William Wordsworth’s quill might be hidden. With guided tours on Tuesdays, Meet the maid Wednesdays and opportunities to dress up in period clothes, be prepared to be truly immersed in the Georgian lifestyle.
While wandering through the many rooms, visitors can take in the ‘Scree’ exhibition which explores our complicated and ever-changing relationship with the landscape that surrounds us. Co-created with local poet, writer and photographer Lucy Burnett, the mix of photography, poems and objects is an open invitation to revisit our favourite places throughout the lakes from a different perspective.
Zoe Gilbert, Wordsworth House’s Visitor Experience and Operations Manager, says: ‘Scree is about nature’s power to shape us and the impact we, in turn, have on the environment. These are issues that affect us all.
Wordsworth House’s walled riverside garden was William’s secret childhood playground and it is still a favourite refuge from the surrounding urban life. This time of year, you can smell the roses or watch the birds wander through the heritage vegetables shrubs and thriving fruit trees. The beds are also brimming with a huge variety of flowers including red hot pokers, golden marjoram and sneezewort which are thronged with bees. Families can relax with a picnic and enjoy a moment of peace while listening to the Derwent, Williams ‘fairest of all rivers’, as it gurgles by.
