Two Day "Sew ANY Hole House Bag" Workshop

Makers Mill

Back for 2025!

NEW bring your own Hole House pattern! Have you previously bought a Hole House pattern but have just been too nervous to start it? Maybe you did give it a go, but lost momentum and need some help getting back into it?  This workshop is designed for anyone who is already on their bag making journey, but for one reason or another has stalled and needs some help and encouragement to get that bag finished. Let us provide you with the space and time to get your head back into the making process, with as much help and advice as you need.

You can bring any Hole House pattern, or more than one if you want. Because of the range of bags beings made, you will need to provide your own materials but Emma can help with this ahead of the workshop if you need advice.

Two days uninterrupted sewing, we’ll feed you and provide tea/coffee and cake, Emma will be on hand to help with those tricky bits and explain the techniques involved and then you get to go home with a new bag - if this sounds like fun, this could be the perfect workshop for you!

Suitable for intermediate sewers:

Because of the nature of this workshop, you should be able to follow a sewing pattern and use your sewing machine confidently. As everyone will be making different bags, this cannot be ‘taught’ in the same way as some of the more ‘beginner friendly’ workshops.

Included in the cost of your workshop is lunch, tea and coffee throughout the day and afternoon cake.

Emma is also running workshop on the following dates:

Everlasting Stained Glass Succulent with North Lakes Stained Glass

Makers Mill

Do you love house plants, but struggle to keep them alive or just don’t have time to look after them?  An everlasting succulent is the answer – as ‘easy care’ as they come whilst doubling up as a piece of art work!  Come join us for an exciting and immersive full day workshop, exploring the wonderful heritage craft of stained glass with a contemporary twist.  At the end of the class you will be able to take home your own handmade, unique 3D potted cactus or succulent to either keep for yourself or to give as a truly stunning gift.

Suitable for both complete beginners and those already experienced working with glass, this workshop will introduce you to the tiffany foiling process and techniques for how to assemble 3D structures out of glass, giving you the foundation skills to go on to create more pieces in the future should you wish or to attend more advanced classes.

We start the day learning how to handle and work with glass safely, showing you some examples of finished plants and then provide you with a choice of design templates to use as well as a beautiful selection of glass to work with throughout the day.

I will then guide you through how to cut glass and shape each individual piece to your pattern, wrap them in the copper foil and apply the solder, before moving on to constructing and potting up your plants in the second half of the day!

All tools and safety equipment will be supplied, and payment for materials will need to be paid directly to your tutor on the day.  However, due to the nature of the craft, please can you ensure you are wearing closed shoes (no sandals, crocs or sling-backs) and that long hair is tied back.  If you wear reading glasses, it is also advisable to bring these for the close detail work.

As the soldering process does involve lead based products, it is not advisable for pregnant women to attend and children between the ages of 16 & 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Please note there is a material cost of £35 payable to the tutor on the day (this includes the cost of your glass, solder, copper foil, pot for your succulent, wire and gravel).

Included in the cost of your workshop is lunch, afternoon cake and tea and coffee throughout the day.

Stained Glass Festive Flower Stems with North Lakes Stained Glass

Makers Mill

Come join us to explore the wonderful heritage craft of stained glass with a contemporary twist, to
create a completely unique festive decorative ornament for your home or to give as a beautiful gift.

This 3-hour workshop will introduce you to the process of the tiffany foiling method to create a
selection of 2 or 3 beautiful and bespoke festive flower and leaf stems for you to take home on the
day. Think holly, winterberry, mistletoe, starflower, eucalyptus or even tulips and roses!

Suitable for both complete beginners, returning students who may have attended the spring flowers
workshop, or those already experienced working with glass, all you need to bring is yourself and an
open mind and some festive cheer!

Starting with an introduction to different types of glass and design, we’ll cover how to handle and
work with glass safely and show you examples of work to provide you with some inspiration or
pattern templates to base your individual pieces on.

Once you have chosen your glass from the wide selection of colours, textures and beads provided, I
will then guide you through how to cut and shape each individual piece of your flowers and leaves,
wrap them in the copper foil and then join them onto their stems. You can then finish your stems by
applying a number final touches such as wire, patina (darkening of the silver solder) or painted detail
should you wish before we stop to admire our work!

All tools, materials and safety equipment will be supplied. However, due to the nature of the craft,
please can you ensure you are wearing closed shoes (no sandals, crocs or sling-backs) and that long
hair is tied back. If you wear reading glasses, it is also advisable to bring these for the close detail
work!!

As the soldering process does involve lead based products, it is not advisable for pregnant women to
attend and children between the ages of 16 & 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Included in the cost of your workshop is cake and tea and coffee.

Two Day Make a Satchel Bag Workshop with Hole House

Makers Mill

We are very excited to invite you to join Emma Redfern of Hole House for a TWO FULL DAYS of sewing to create a Satchel Bag.

The satchel is a traditional shape, perfect for wearing either cross body or on the shoulder. It’s a practical, but smart looking bag that can be made in tweed or canvas weight fabric, and with lots of options so it’s perfect for personalising.

As this is a two day workshop, you will have the chance to really work on the details of your bag, including which flap shape you choose (or draft your own!), the closure, how many pockets to include and whether you make the large or medium size.  The outer can also be stitched in two different fabrics for some lovely colour blocking if that’s your thing!

We will be stitching a fabric strap too which will be fully adjustable.  You will work through these design details at the beginning of the workshop with the tutor, so that you can create your own unique bag with confidence.

Suitable for adventurous beginners / intermediate sewists:

You should be able to thread and use your sewing machine confidently, a zipper foot is useful if you have one. There isn’t any technically difficult sewing but there are some bulky seams to handle.

All specialist materials will be provided, along with full written instructions and a paper pattern to take away with you.

  • 0.75m of an outer fabric, or two coordinating outer fabrics (regular width fabric approx. 140cm)
  • 1m of lining fabric to allow for extra pockets
  • If you would like to use webbing for your strap, rather than making one, bring 1.5m of 38mm or 40mm webbing.
  • Matching Thread
  • Fully operational sewing machine.

Please note there is a £20 material charge payable to the tutor on the day. This includes interfacing, interlining, twist lock closure, strap hardware, zips, pattern and instructions.

Two Day "Sew ANY Hole House Bag" Workshop

Makers Mill
10 - 11 May 2025

15th & 16th March - Pippa Satchel

10th & 11th May - Sew ANY Hole House Bag

18th & 19th October - June Convertible

1st & 2nd November - Satchel Bag

Back for 2025! Learn the art of mosaic design and practice the skills needed to make a mosaic that can
live outdoors.

In this class you will learn the difference between an indoor and outdoor mosaic and will be introduced to the materials best suited for an outdoor piece.

This is the perfect class for beginners and for those wishing to expand their mosaic knowledge.

When we think of mosaic, we often associate them with being outdoors but if you don’t know what you are doing all your hard work can be undone when the frost and rain compromise the stability of your mosaic and loosen your tiles. This workshop will teach you everything you need to know to ensure that your mosaic can live a long and happy life outside!

We will be using the mosaic onto mesh method and there will be a variety of templates and ideas to choose from or you can bring along your own design. You will be taught how to cut and nibble glass and ceramic tiles and learn about the different adhesives for outdoor mosaics.

There will be an opportunity to work a small sample using cement adhesive onto a weatherproof backing board so that you can compare and contrast the different methods.

You will need to bring along a piece of stiff board that will be used as the base for your mosaic to rest on. It needs to be flat and sturdy - A tray or piece of wood / board/ stiff card. Your base needs to be roughly 40cm x 40cm.

Please note there is a £25 material cost on the day and all tools are provided. You will leave with a completed mosaic together with the additional materials needed to fix your piece in the outdoor location of your choosing.

Included in the cost of your workshop is lunch, tea and coffee for the duration and afternoon cake.
