Speaker: Ian Hall
Before Manchester dammed Thirlmere in the 1890s it was a peaceful little valley with two jewels of lakes bridged at their waist by iconic pedestrian footbridges. It was home to the enigmatic Countess Ossalinsky who battled to prevent its damming. This illustrated lecture brings together paintings, sketches and photographs of the lakes, farms, inns and church, together with drone shots of some of the drowned farmsteads which last emerged in the drought of 2021, and tells a little of the Countess’s astonishing story.
1pm. The talk will last around 45-60 minutes, including time for questions and discussion.
