After the success of Keswick Choral Society’s sell-out Festival of Christmas Music, the choir is now rehearsing for its concert on 27 April. This will take the form of a Spring Prom, comprising one major work and a number of popular favourites as well as lesser-known works
The “Gloria” by French composer Francis Poulenc dates from 1961 and is an unusual, rousing setting of familiar words. An exciting work, it will be performed with organ accompaniment by Jordan English of St Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh
Outstanding soprano Jane Burnell, from the Royal Northern College of Music, will take the solo part in the Poulenc, and also in Mozart’s beloved “Laudate Dominum” and Handel’s thrilling “Let the Bright Seraphim”.
Fauré’s contemplative “Cantique de Jean Racine” will contrast with a rousing “Te Deum” by his contemporary Stanford
More recent English music is to be represented by the ever-popular John Rutter, Ken Burton’s foot-tapping arrangement of “Ev’ry time I feel the Spirit”, and Britten’s lively “Jubilate”.
Jordan English will play Elgar’s “Nimrod”, and “Pomp and Circumstance No. 1” - familiar to all as “Land of Hope and Glory”. The audience will have the opportunity to join in singing Parry’s “Jerusalem”.
