Details

In this musical drama, actor and classically trained singer Lucy Stevens, tells the story of the 1930’s star of musical comedy Gertrude Lawrence. Using text drawn from Gertrude Lawrence’s memoirs and letters woven with songs from her repertoire, Lucy tells the Gertrude Lawrence story from her perspective for the first time.  A feisty, strong woman from Clapham, Gertie transcended the class ceiling, forging her stage and screen career into her 50’s. The show celebrates her brilliance, on and off stage, with pacy dialogue which is funny and revealing. Bursting with over 20 songs from London variety and revue to hits by Noel Coward and Kurt Weill. A theatrical cabaret performed by Lucy Stevens with pianist Elizabeth Marcus.  Directed by award winning cabaret artist Sarah-Louise Young.

Lucy Stevens studied acting at Rose Bruford College of Speech & Drama and voice at Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. She has performed in productions at: The Old Vic, West Yorkshire Playhouse, Arts Theatre, Liverpool Playhouse, Longborough Festival Opera, Opera Holland Park, Sadler’s Wells and The Royal Opera House. Recently Lucy has created new small-scale theatre productions in which song and the spoken word weave seamlessly through text drawn from autobiographical writings, touring Virginia Woolf: Killing the Angel, Ethel Smyth: Grasp the Nettle and Kathleen Ferrier Whattalife! throughout the UK and internationally and featuring on BBC 2, BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio 4. Elizabeth Marcus studied at the Guildhall School of Music, where she won the Memorial Prize as top graduate. She is now a professor and fellow at Guildhall School of Music. Elizabeth has performed at the Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room, Queen Elizabeth Hall, St John's Smith Square and the Royal Opera House. She has appeared in concert with Alastair Miles, Janice Watson, Sally Matthews and Claire Rutter and has broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and 4, Classic FM, BBC TV and Channel 4. In her role as music director, Elizabeth has performed throughout the UK and internationally with Lucy Stevens, in Kathleen Ferrier Whattalife!, Ethel Smyth: Grasp the Nettle and Virginia Woolf: Killing the Angel.
