Castlerigg, Keswick
The elevated area of Castlerigg lies a mile to the south east of Keswick. Rich in history, myth and legend Castlerigg provides a wealth of interest whilst offering some of the best short walks in the Keswick area. The name Castlerigg means literally a castle on a hill and although it is well documented that a castle once stood here it was dismantled to build a house of pleasure on Lords Island, Derwentwater The precise location of where the castle stood is now unknown.
High on the list of many visitors to the Lake District is a walk to the mysterious Castlerigg Stone Circle, a 4000 year old Neolithic stone circle with magnificent 360° panoramic views. Its purpose is a point of speculation however it may well have been used as a trading point or an astronomical observatory.
Castlerigg Hall, birthplace of Sir John Bankes, is one of the oldest properties in the Keswick area with many historic links including the Jacobite rebellion, and is now one of two caravan and camping parks at Castlerigg.
