Buttermere

Buttermere is a lovely village situated at the foot of the Newlands Pass between the lakes of Buttermere and Crummock Water. There are two pubs, a cafe and an ice cream parlour in the village.

There are plenty of opportunities for high level walking including Red Pike, High Stile, Fleetwith Pike, Rannerdale Knotts and Haystacks. There are footpaths around both Buttermere and Crummock Water. The walk around Buttermere only takes about 2 to 3 hours set amongst some of the finest scenery in the Lake District. Walks from the Honister Pass include the summit of Great Gable. Other nearby fell walks include Melbreak, Grasmoor and Whiteside. The nearby Newlands Valley also provides a wide variety of walking routes including low level valley walks, ridge walks and fell walks such as Causey Pike, Barrow, Robinson, Hindscarth, Catbells, Maiden Moor and Dale Head.

The Buttermere Valley is the only valley in Cumbria possessing three lakes. Buttermere, Crummock Water and Loweswater occupy the long glaciated valley leading North and West to Cockermouth and the coast. Buttermere and Crummock Water, originally one large lake, are separated by a spread of material brought down by the mountains treams over thousands of years. Crummock is the largest of the three. About a mile up Scale Beck, which flows into Crummock is Scale Force, the highest waterfall in England, with a drop of 120 feet.

Buttermere is served by the Honister Rambler bus route. This bus service (77/77A) operates in both clockwise and anti clockwise directions taking in Portinscale, Catbells, Grange, Seatoller, Honister Slate Mine, Buttermere, Lorton and Whinlatter Forest. For bus timetables click here.
